Case Study: Emma Swaps Its SMTP Infrastructure for PowerMTA to Handle Growing Mail Volume

Over the years, email service provider Emma has experienced 35% annual growth in email volume from its new and existing clients. Emma’s services include email automation, audience segmentation, mobile email marketing, and integration with CRM solutions, eCommerce platforms, and social networks. Emma has developed an innovative Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) with sophisticated messaging features — from data-driven insights, to email automation — rapidly and without service interruptions. The EDA architecture gives marketers real-time insights, allowing them to personalize each customer’s experience.

The Challenge

A major obstacle that drove Emma to consider PowerMTA was an expected forthcoming collision between mail volumes that had risen to 375M messages/ month, and its 10-year-old, home-grown PHP-based system. The technology had reached the end of its scalability, being cumbersome to configure, and lacking deployment features and sophisticated delivery controls. Emma urgently needed a better solution to manage the growing volume, one that would include the capacity to add smarthooks at minimal cost.

Key features of the old system were either missing or difficult to use, such as retry back-offs, rate limiting, DKIM, and the ability to react proactively to SMTP reply responses. As the company grew, it would be expensive, awkward, and risky to scale the aging technology — it was clearly time for a replacement.

Solution

Emma now uses PowerMTA to manage its increasing mail volume efficiently, with a minimal investment while allowing it to scale its business exponentially, without bottlenecks or unreasonable expense.

Emma’s system administrators were drawn to PowerMTA’s flexible logging schematics, as well as its easy-to-configure VirtualMTA pools, ability to configure retry and total time in queue, and the ability to send large volumes of mail using modest hardware.

Emma’s digital messaging volume currently averages 1.5M hourly, 12M daily, and 375M monthly, expected to double in the relative near-term, consistent with industry forecasts.

Some of Pinterest's most hardcore fans are feeling 'alienated'

woman on laptopEarlier this week, Pinterest announced that it will soon launch Buy buttons on millions of its pins, which will allow users to make purchases directly from the site.

It’s a huge money-making opportunity for the company.

Pinterest won’t take fees from either users or retailers, but e-commerce companies that sell on the site will be able to more easily credit it for influencing customer purchases, thus driving up the amount that Pinterest can charge for its ads (called “Promoted Pins”).

While the move may create dollar-signs for Pinterest, it feels like a kick-in-the-gut to some “power pinners,” the people who used to be able to make money on the site.

Feeling alienated

“Well, I guess that’s why they killed off affiliate links,” wedding blogger and founder of The Big Fat Indian Wedding Preeti Moberg whispered to me during the buyable pin presentation.

She was referring to Pinterest’s decision in February to ban affiliate networks from its platform.

Previously, Pinterest users could post pins of products that had affiliate tags and links to the sites where people could buy the items. Every time someone bought a product through an affiliate link, the pinner would get a cut of the sale. At the time, Pinterest said that it banned that practice because it had “observed affiliate links and redirects causing irrelevant Pins in feeds, broken links and other spammy behavior.”

People who once made revenue from affiliate links were angry about Pinterest’s decision. Although the company stressed that bloggers and Pinterest users could still make money through by curating boards for brands, consulting, or creating original content, those opportunities aren’t as easy to find as simply using affiliate networks.

pinterestPinterest

Although Moberg says that she completely understands why Pinterest decided to launch the buy button, she says that she and other loyal pinners feel abandoned. She had just started making money from affiliate links before Pinterest shut them down, but she knows bloggers who made thousands of dollars per month.

“How do you satisfy our side?” she asked. “What is Pinterest going to do with all the power bloggers? I think a lot of people are feeling alienated. I feel alienated too. We brought a lot of traffic — where do we stand in this whole thing now?”

Broke Ass BrideBroke Ass BrideThe site Moynihan works for

Another wedding blogger, Christen Moynihan of Broke Ass Bride who also runs an affiliate marketing site called Bourbon and Sparkle, says that seeing Pinterest add a buy button where she and other bloggers could once promote products for their own gain was “kind of a kick in the gut.” Overall, her goal has always been to drive traffic to her own site with quality content though.

“Do I think Pinterest is changing in a way that no longer puts wedding bloggers, who have previously been integral to the rise of the machine, on a pedestal? Sure. It sucks from that perspective,” she said via email. “However, it’s not the only social media platform we’ve seen change … It’s just the only one we’ve seen change in a way that severely limits the use of that channel as a revenue stream for us.”

One lifestyle blogger was disappointed by how little credit Pinterest has given to bloggers who helped the site grow, but not surprised by its decision to cut affiliate links.

“It seemed too good to be true, and it was,” she told Business Insider via email. “I think it’s a bit shameful that Pinterest cut off affiliate programs without much warning, and without at least acknowledging that bloggers basically made the company what it is today.”

She admits that she blogs not just for the money and will continue to write and keep sharing pins, but that she won’t share product pins anymore.

Joanne Bradford, Pinterest’s head of partnerships, told Business Insider at Tuesday’s event that even though the move to cut affiliate links may have hurt some pinners who were making money, “Pinterest ensures that the consumer experience is the most protected, and the best experience possible.”

Cutting off affiliate links and taking control of its e-commerce business seems like a natural evolution for Pinterest, which scored an $11 billion valuation for its last Series G fundraise and has raised a grand total of $1.3 billion so far. But it might take a while for the power pinners to stop smarting.

Pinterest purseAP Photo/NordstromThis undated image provided by Nordstrom shows a handbag made popular on Pinterest that is available at Nordstrom stores.

Pinterest maintains that power users can still find other ways to make money, and that now product info will be much more up to date.

“We support many ways a Pinner can work with or for a brand that don’t incentivize the poor user experience we observed with affiliate networks,” a Pinterest spokesperson said via email.

“They can continue to be paid to curate boards for brands’ profiles, consult and create original content for businesses. Also, with updates like Rich Pins and Buyable Pins, we’re giving Pinners the ability to take action on Pins with up-to-date info that will always direct to the original source, which is great for Pinners, and for giving those blogs and websites referral traffic and driving sales. For those wanting to purchase a product for example, getting to the transaction in a few taps is a better experience than being redirected to a potentially spammy or out of date link.”

Five Big Mistakes New Affiliate Marketers Make

Earning a reward in the form of a commission, by selling someone else’s products can be appealing to budding marketers looking to make money online. However, a lot of mistakes can be made when trying to establish your own successful monetised site. Below highlights some of the biggest mistakes prospective affiliates make when entering the affiliate marketing space.

Lack of research

A fundamental error is not understanding what affiliate marketing actually is, and consequentially, the ways in which it could best work for you. Too often people enquire on how to join affiliate networks as a publisher before having a website in place, which is essential to getting started in the channel.

Another common instance would be building a basic website which lacks strong relevant content, adding a few links and then wonder ‘why isn’t my site making any money?’

Once the value of the affiliate marketing business model is understood and the focus and purpose of your website is defined, then you can switch you attention to researching the actual products and services you wish to promote.

Pushing the sale

Placing too much emphasis on directing readers to a ‘Click to Action’ button to try to push a sale will inevitably have the diverse effect of pushing your site traffic away. You can see how this is an easy mistake to make, as ultimately you make money by driving people to an advertiser’s site to then purchase a product which you receive commission on. So placing ‘Buy Now’ buttons on your site seems like an appropriate call, right?

However, the key is driving relevant traffic, as the more relevant the traffic, the more likely people are to convert and generate you a commission. Therefore ideally you should aim to focus on credibility by becoming an authority in your industry and provide knowledge on the products or services you are promoting. Avoid just placing an affiliate link on your site, instead write some content around the product. Maybe you have tried and tested the product and this will help establish a connection with the reader. People are far less likely to purchase a product if they feel they are being pushed to purchase. Instead, focus on educating your audience on the product you’re promoting.

Once this has been accomplished, you will have become a valued source of information to those who use your site and a key component in their buying decision process. Only then are you likely to see sustained conversions being driven through your site.

Promoting irrelevant programs

Promoting as many affiliate programmes as possible in an effort to maximise your revenue streams may sound appealing to new affiliate marketers just starting out. However there will come a point where your site will lose its focus, particularly if you are trying to adhere to all of these programmes. As a result, content quality will suffer, alienating your hard-earned traffic which will eventually drive them away.

Instead, focus on a small group of relevant programmes your site will complement, as this will be far more manageable for you and far more rewarding for those who visit your site. Maintaining the purpose of your website and the confidence of your users you have established is key to running a successful affiliate site.

Radio silence

Another fallout from joining either irrelevant or multiple programmes is that you give yourself too much to do and can become too thinly spread to make the most of these relationships. This leads to many new affiliate marketers failing to speak to the advertisers who are likely to make the biggest difference to how effective your site can be. Building a relationship with all your key players, whether this is the advertiser directly, or with either an agency or network, will play a vital role in your success as an affiliate.

By establishing these relationships, you are able to let them know about the opportunities available on your site and the demographics of your audience. This helps the advertiser position you in their wider affiliate strategy, particularly if you are able to prove the success of promotions they have run with you with case studies. These could lead to either more promotions from the advertiser or a direct competitor. The more you know about the products you are promoting and the more the advertiser knows about your opportunities, the more effective you will be as an affiliate.

Inactivity

Arguably one of the biggest mistakes new affiliate marketers make is inactivity. Too often new sites are set up with content and links to advertisers and then the site owner gets comfortable, sits back and expects the money to just roll in. This is not how affiliate marketing works, you need to work at it.

You need to remain active with the work you put into your site, it’s easy to fall into the trap of regularly updating your content every week and sending out a blog post every day, to sporadically updating your site every few months.  To keep your users engaged you need to keep providing them with fresh content that encourages them to keep coming back to the site, to see what the latest news and offers are on the products they are interested in.

Conclusion

Making sure you’ve done your research on both affiliate marketing and the products you will be promoting, whilst maintaining the focus of your site and the trust of your audience is pivotal to running a successful affiliate site. In most cases, affiliate sites fail when these objectives are either unaccomplished or become neglected.

These are just some of the mistakes I’ve seen new affiliates make but by avoiding these you can then establish a strong foundation to become a successful affiliate. This will take time, as you will have to work hard to keep your sites content relevant to constantly moving trends and work smart to maintain your relationships.

Taboola gets $3M investment from Daily Mail

Dive Brief:

  • Daily Mail announced a $3 million investment in publishing tech firm Taboola to help it improve its native advertising strategies.

  • According to CEO Jon Steinberg, “At the end of the day, we have to move so quickly. We’re all competing against Facebook, ultimately.”

  • Daily Mail had been frustrated with its current system of selling native ads through DoubleClick, citing efficiency as the issue. The Taboola investment will help the publication speed up the native ad process and eventually create new native ad units.

Dive Insight:

Steinberg’s candor about competing with Facebook rings true. With Instant Articles and other advancements, Facebook has become the standard by which publications can measure their success. Outside of using Facebook directly, publications are on the hunt for new revenue streams and ad opportunities.

Taboola represents those opportunities for the Daily Mail. Taboola also announced a new product this week — a feature that allows readers to weigh in on what native ad content they see. The feature will not only improve reader experience, but also glean reader data that will improve native ad delivery overall.

Comparison of Affiliate Marketing With Other Businesses

Affiliate marketing is a type of internet advertising in which affiliates drive the traffic to the advertiser’s website for sales. In turn the affiliates receive a share from the advertisers. Affiliates place the ads of advertisers on their websites.

There are various advantages as well as risks associated with this online business. Let us compare this online business with an office job or other business. This may help someone who is considering this business.

1. Low Cost Business

Most people are afraid to start a home based business because of the capital that is normally needed. With affiliate marketing, you need not worry about the money because it does not require much investment. It truly is a low cost business. It is even possible to start this business without any investment.

2. Inventories Not Required

In all other businesses, product management is the most stressful aspect in running your business. In many cases, it is necessary to hire additional people to handle your inventory. But in the case of affiliate marketing, you are not required to maintain any inventory. All of this is done solely by the merchants. This is yet another advantage of affiliate marketing.

3. Unlimited Income

If you are a successful affiliate marketer then you can earn unlimited income. If your website has got a high page ranking then it is assured that you will get more and more sales with the passage of time. After your business is up and running well, you usually don’t need any more investment. Not like other businesses where your income is always limited and you are always required more investments to expand your business.

4. Worldwide Business

With affiliate marketing, your market is not limited to your city or even your country. In this field you have a global market. You just need to set up your website and drive traffic to it from all over the world.

5. Risk

As you know, to start marketing as an affiliate you are not required to make a big investment. This makes it a virtual risk free business. This is the reason why more and more people are engaging in this field day by day. The only risk involved in this business is your time if you are not doing it properly. If you are not equipped with proper knowledge to do this business then you may end up with nothing in hand after waiting for months.

6. 24 hours Sales

As I have said, if you choose to earn your income as an affiliate marketer, the entire world becomes your potential customers. Your business in affiliate marketing continues twenty-four hours a day. This means that yes, you are earning even when you are sleeping.

You will only enjoy all of the above benefits of affiliate marketing, if you have selected the right products, the right merchants and the right market.

Affiliate marketing has many benefits over other businesses. The main benefits are less investment requirement, 24 hours sale and unlimited sales. But not all the people can be successful in this business as it requires the patience, focus and proper knowledge of market trends. So the risks associated with this business are for those who are not well equipped with proper knowledge and training.

Datasift Expands Its Reach With New Pulsar Deal To Make Facebook Topic Data Bigger

Datasift, which has raised a total of $77.9 million to date, is partnering with social analytics platform Pulsar to make anonymized Facebook topic data available to any brands, government, charities and businesses. Last year Datasift did a Secondary Market raise of $6.2M from Upfront Ventures. This new deal shows Datasift is pushing hard to become a mainstay of the ad agency world.

Because Datasift is the exclusive provider of Facebook topic data, this new partnership with Pulsar means businesses can access Facebook topic data and conduct research through social media. What this means is that means that the realm of social data just got bigger. The whole area is now coming into its own as agencies will be able to add it to their bank of knowledge on how social media can prove its ROI in an advertising and marketing driven online world.

So why is Facebook topic data important? Well, it anonymously shows marketers what content audiences are sharing on topics which are relevant to their brands, plus the demographics of the people engaging around them on the world’s largest social platform (remember, this is about 1.44 billion MAUs). There are over 60 ‘targets’ to sample data against.

This partnership provides Pulsar’s clients with access to anonymous and aggregated content data about the activities, events, brands and topics people are sharing on Facebook, via Datasift’s platform. Pulsar’s social analytics platform lets companies map brand audiences, assess how content spreads and engage with people on social media.

The caveat to this deal however is that Facebook topic data is a different proposition to other sources of social data and agencies and platforms still have to work get used to using them. It is to be hoped that Pulsar can make this process easier, because it’s still possible to use all this data in quite a naïve manner. It still requires thought, experimentation and planning by agencies and their brands. So it’s not a magic bullet, but it is a potentially powerful one, if used wisely.

That said, Pulsar has got to market early with this integration with Datasift, so it’s ‘ahead of the pack’ compared to its competitors.

• Nick Halstead will be speaking at the upcoming Europas Conference, which is partnering with TechCrunch.

Three strategies to increase email marketing engagement

Powerful email campaigns remain the bedrock of digital strategy. But you’re facing stiff competition out there with an estimated 144.8 billion emails sent and received across the globe daily.

The question in everybody’s inbox is, how do we get customers to not only read our emails, and more importantly, how do we use email to increase conversions?

Here are some strategies that will get your customers clicking.

Be brief

When you’re struggling to stand out, keeping it short and sharp is critical.

Crafting well-written, personalised and actionable emails will keep your readers engaged and enticed. Think of your EDM’s as a taste tester. The aim is to give away enough information to encourage a click through. This is not the forum for a thesis.

An EDM is essentially a small window of opportunity to get your point across. Getting creative with your message and call to action will help you get noticed.

Madewell.com do a great job at putting together short, snappy and campaign relevant EDMs.

To personalise or not to personalise?

There’s two camps on personalisation. Those in the ‘for’ camp, believe that taking the time to humanise your emails can increase conversions by 20%. Those against believe that it’s insincere and errs on the side of lame.

Personally, I see value in both sides of the argument. I often receive personalised emails from companies I have never bought from. Personalisation in the absence of a relationship is borderline spam and will do more damage than good.

If you are going to get personal, do it well. If you’re using placeholders, make sure that all the fields are matched correctly. There is nothing personal about a receiving an email that opens with “Dear <name>”.

Bringing personality to your EDMs is another gentle and sincere way to breed digital connection. Try sending campaigns from different staff members, i.e., a thank you message from our founder or a follow up email from your actual customer service team.

In reality, people relate to people. This is no different in the digital sphere.

Personalisation is about more than sending emails addressed to the recipient. It can be about adding personal touches.

This email from J.Crew includes actual email addresses of personal stylists. This is a creative and intelligent way of increasing conversions through personalisation.

Sorting out segments

With over 144.8 billion emails exchanged daily, relevancy is king.

Segmentation allows us to get to the crux of relevance and helps us preach directly to the converted.

Most CMS platforms will break down your database into various segments of activity like demographics, purchase history, location and area of interest.

Sending Mr John Citizen the latest range of ladies size 8 stilettos is not going to win you any points for accuracy.

There is a direct link between relevancy and results. Spend some time working out who your segments are and whether the contact point is useful.

Email campaigns can be as much art as they are science. At the heart of every business are its customers. Emerging technology, data and information analytics give us the unprecedented opportunity to get to know our customers in a factual and predictive way. The more instinctively you understand your customers and their buying habits, the better your email marketing and conversions will be.

The Facebook Marketing Services were brought to life by CMS Social in an effort to help businesses monitor, update, and respond to consumer comments on their Facebook accounts without taking the time away from other work projects that may need their attention. Not all pricing options are the same, as CMS Social allows their clients to choose from a selection of social media packages, each with its own benefits. To take a closer look at the price points and plans available, the company urges businesses to view their package overview at http://www.cmssocial.com/plans-pricing/ This provides greater insight into the variety of advantages made possible such as content posting to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, and LinkedIn along with customer service for $129 per month. For more management over Facebook in particular, CMS Social also offers a more Facebook oriented package with customer interaction and comment monitoring for $209 per month. They describe it as follows:

“Five (5) days per week, Monday thru Friday between the hours of 7am to 7pm PST, we will monitor and respond to all relevant Likes, comments, and messages left on your Facebook page. Any messages we feel are important will be forwarded to you to either respond yourself or provide us a response to post on your behalf.”

The science behind the service is that with most of the world utilizing mobile devices, laptops and computers to check social media nearly once every hour, the chances of increasing brand recognition grows when businesses get their names onto these platforms. This seems to be the theory that drives CMS Social to continue providing their services at increasingly competitive rates. They have said that with social media connections being long term goals rather than short term successes, these services should be used over a long period of time to create the desired effect with consumers. They state:

“Social media is a relationship-building tool and relationships cannot be rushed. Social media marketing takes a long-term commitment and you will not see results overnight. Longevity and consistency is the only way social media works to help produce your business leads – yes, leads not sales or money.”

The company believes that social media is a tool, which when used properly, can build lasting relationships between consumers and businesses. It is promoted as an inexpensive way to build a brand from the bottom up by allowing followers to share and like content, spreading it to friends, family, and colleagues in a more modern version of word of mouth marketing. The concept covers a large range of industries across the globe, including everything from law firms to retail chains.

It’s no secret that affiliate marketing is a fantastic way to make money online.

Most products have an affiliate program, and some even pay you as much as 75%! All you have to do is find the ones that pay the most, sign up, drive traffic to that site through your affiliate link and you’re all set right?

Wrong! Let’s back up a minute.

It’s great to choose an affiliate program that pays a high percentage, but that’s not most important. It’s most important to find a quality affiliate program that meets certain criteria.

First, you want to make sure the product is a proven seller. You don’t want to waste your time and money driving traffic to a site that doesn’t convert. Find one with a good conversion rate.

Second, make sure the site you become an affiliate for protects his affiliates, and has your best interest at heart. Look for one that provides banners, e-mails, and other tools you can use to promote the site. Also, make sure that there is only one payment option. As an affiliate marketer, you need to be sure that you will get credit for your referral. If there is more than one payment method, you can get shortchanged.

Third, do not choose an affiliate program that promotes an e-mail course. Nothing angers me more than becoming an affiliate to a site that’s first goal is to capture e-mail addresses, and then tries to make the sale second. As an affiliate marketer, you need to capture e-mail addresses, then to convert that prospect into a sale. Stick with affiliate programs that aren’t focused on capturing leads because it’s simply not in your best interest. Build your own list, not someone else’s.

Affiliate marketing can be an absolute goldmine, but if you choose the wrong affiliate programs you will only be wasting your money.

Another quick note: Don’t let anyone tell you a particular Niche is too saturated. Unless you have deep pockets you should stay away from industries like credit repair, gambling, insurance, etc. However, you can even succeed in those if you are inventive enough. Try out new methods of generating leads. Be creative.

Who knows, you may even surprise yourself.

Top 5 Reasons to Use Google's New Call Only Campaigns

Google has proven once again that it is the king of online marketing with paid search marketing campaigns. Their latest innovation is called “Call-Only Campaigns”, a new type of ad which focus solely on mobile users. Call-only campaigns help you focus on your mobile traffic, where the conversion event is more than often a call. This new type of search campaign works amazingly well for advertisers, publishers and corporations that benefit more from a phone call than from a click.

For instance, if you own a roofing company or a hotel, Google’s call only campaigns could prove ten times more useful than a standard PPC campaign, because the customer will contact you directly instead of accessing your website first. If you have not made up your mind yet, here are the 5 big reasons to include call-only campaigns in your marketing strategy.

1. Extremely effective

Mobile users have the tendency to click on the phone number first and only after that on business description and website. This makes call-only ads the most effective PPC ads.

2. Proven to be genuine

According to a study conducted in the United States by a group of marketers led by scientists from the University of Virginia, over 70% of mobile users call a company directly from search results, while around 29% call it after finding a phone number on the website.

3. User-Friendly

This method of promoting your company is extremely user friendly. Users can easily find your number in search results, click it and call you directly. There is no need to copy-paste the number or memorize it (this is the case of websites and blogs).

4. Lower bids

Call-only ads are more affordable compared to other PPC ads for desktop Internet users.

5. Good value for the money

Most people who call a business using call-only ads are normally more serious, with a higher intent to become a customer.
