Why affiliate marketing is a growing opportunity for advertisers

A report finds over 80% of advertisers are devoting at least 10% of their marketing budgets to the strategy

Affiliate marketing is a growing opportunity for advertisers, but is it right for you?

A new report finds that the perception around affiliate marketing is shifting  and advertisers and publishers alike are seeing new value in the strategy.

To better understand the state of affiliate marketing, Rakuten Marketing commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct research on Networks Help Drive Affiliate Marketing Into the Mainstream” report, which found that the market for affiliate marketing is expected to increase from $4.2 billion in 2015 to $6.8 billion in 2020.

The report found:

  • A high level of interest in affiliate programs: More than 80% of advertisers and 84% of publishers surveyed ran an affiliate program, and more than 80% of advertisers devoted 10% of their marketing budget to affiliate marketing.

  • Affiliate marketing was part of the entire buying process: 83% of surveyed marketers targeted consumer during the discovery and awareness phase, 79% during conversion or purchase, and 79% used affiliate marketing to create ongoing customer engagement.

  • Marketers are measuring the success of affiliate programs: 80% of surveyed marketers tracked desktop and mobile sales, 66% tracked catalog-driven sales, and 57% tracked brick-and-mortar sales.

  • Advertisers use affiliate marketing to develop relationships: 83% use affiliate network dashboards to recruit partners and 79% attend event hosted by affiliate networks. More than half of publishers use network-provided platforms to manage affiliate efforts.

“The way consumers discover and take in information has shifted drastically over the years, while their level of sophistication and expectation toward advertisements has increased,” Adam Weiss, general manager and senior vice president of Rakuten Affiliate Network, told Marketing Dive in an interview. “Presenting content that drives real value in a trustworthy way can be a significant challenge for brands and content creators, but this challenge can be solved with a smart affiliate marketing strategy.”

Affiliate programs are becoming part of content marketing

Content marketing is a key component of any digital marketing strategy, and affiliate programs are one way marketers are meeting the challenge of creating content that drives real value for customers and delivering it in a trustworthy way. A large part of this is the perception of affiliate programs getting away from direct response and couponing, and being seen more as a way that advertisers can get information out to consumers in a relevant environment.

In the report, an unnamed vice president of sales at a U.S. online publisher explained the new mindset toward affiliate programs: “The biggest positive change I’ve seen has been the change of perception around affiliate, from spammy, bottom-feeder sites to ones like ours, where we’re focused on a great user experience. Two years ago, a CMO wouldn’t go to his board and say, ‘We’re doing great in affiliate!’ but now they see [it delivering].”

Illustrating the value of the programs, almost 90% of marketers surveyed in the report said that affiliate marketing was important or very important to their overall marketing strategy.

One aspect of affiliate programs that can be attractive for advertisers is that most costs associated with affiliate marketing are paid out on a performance basis, including placement, commissions, network fees, and paid bonuses.

Conclusions

The Rakuten and Forrester report came away with three takeaways about the state of affiliate marketing:

  1. Affiliate marketing is an important tool for both advertisers and publishers. A key reason for this is the rise of content marketing as a major aspect of digital marketing. The value of affiliate programs can be seen in the data point that more than 80% of advertisers and publishers alike are tapping into affiliate marketing. Marketers do so in order to find differentiated marketing content, and publishers to drive ad revenue on their websites.

  2. Affiliate networks play an important role in affiliate marketing programs. Affiliate marketing has become more sophisticated and complex, and because of that advertisers and publishers are turning to affiliate networks to manage their programs. Networks help advertisers find new affiliate partners as well as help plan, execute and measure affiliate programs.

  3. Improving measurement is important to unlocking affiliate program potential. Although advertisers are using forecasting and marketing mix tools to analyze and optimize affiliate programs, the study found fewer are making use of advanced attribution tools that provide a multi-channel view into the impact of their affiliate programs.

The report offered marketers a final thought on the state of affiliate marketing: “Affiliate marketing, once regarded more as a tool to drive consumers to the purchase event, is now viewed as a powerful channel for consumer discovery that leads to brand engagement and incremental sales at compelling ROIs. Advertisers are increasingly relying on the affiliate channel to broaden their brand exposure with relevant context. More publishers are taking the opportunity to complement their revenue with advertiser support that delights their readers.”

Snapdeal and Affiliate Marketers Are at an Impasse, but Who Will Blink First?

For online stores, such as Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal, affiliate marketing – where they pay a commission to sites that send them shoppers – is a long established concept. Companies like Amazon made it the norm in the US, and it’s common in India too. And both here and elsewhere, a secondary industry of websites whose business model revolves around affiliate marketing has grown and become a big business opportunity. But Snapdeal seems to be changing the rules of the game by lowering the commission it pays on one of the biggest categories in India e-commerce – mobiles.

As a result of this, many of the biggest sites in this space have decided to get together and cut off traffic to Snapdeal, industry insiders told Gadgets 360. We checked on some well-known coupon sites, such as Couponraja, CouponDunia, and saw that these sites either don’t list products from Snapdeal, or at least aren’t listing phones on Snapdeal. It’s reminiscent of the war between offline and online retailers – offline stores faced a lot of difficulty thanks to online sellers offering lower prices, which led them to form unions to ban e-commerce stores.

(Also see: Where’s my Warranty? The Growing Perils of Shopping Online in India)

We spoke to some of the companies involved – most coupon companies are affected by Snapdeal’s changes, but they’re still making money on other categories of products, and are hoping to directly change the company’s affiliate policy, so they weren’t willing to speak on the record. Even off the record, what we learned mostly came from very guarded answers, but it was enough to paint a picture. On the other side of the story, Snapdeal – and also Flipkart, and Amazon – declined to comment on affiliate partners.

The facts we were able to put together do paint a picture about this issue though. For one thing, Snapdeal has lowered its affiliate payments, and is one of the lowest payouts for mobile phones today. If affiliates refer a new customer, Snapdeal offers 3 percent of the sale as a commission; for existing customers who have bought something on the website already, the payout is 1 percent, for up to 2,500 customers a month, and after that, the commission drops to just 0.1 percent.

Cashkaro has sent press releases stating that it drives 7,000 transactions (across sites and categories) in a single day, or around 210,000 transactions in a month. Based on this, it seems likely that the larger sites would typically drive more than 2,500 sales to Snapdeal in a month, so the payout for them is just 0.1 percent.

If you drive the sale on the Snapdeal app instead, the number is a whopping 4 percent, but one of the couponing sites executives we spoke to told us on the condition of anonymity that the app funnel is more complicated, as the user may not already have the app installed, and on being taken to the app store, then the user is much more likely to cancel the whole exercise than to go through with the sale.

On the other hand, Amazon pays 4 percent on all qualifying purchases (where the customer clicks on a link, comes to the site and adds the product in the same session, and completes the purchase within 89 days) for all consumer electronics. And for Flipkart, the number is 2 percent for existing customers, and 4 percent if the purchase happens on the app, with no cap on the number of orders. For Flipkart exclusives, the number is lower – 3 percent for first time customers and 1 percent for new customers.

flipkart_affiliates.jpg

The figures that the big affiliates get can be a little different, as they can have their own agreements with the e-commerce stores, but the general trends are similar, one person explained to us. For example, another company’s executive told us that it get a payout of 2.8 percent from Flipkart on electronics; it’s lower than the number mentioned for affiliates on the website, but he explains that the company gets slightly better commissions on some types of products. However in the case of Snapdeal, he confirms that the payout is now just 0.1 percent even for his company. In short, Flipkart pays 20 times more than Snapdeal as a commission, and Amazon pays 40 times as much. With such a discrepancy, it starts to become clear why the coupon sites appear to have banded against Snapdeal.

“A lot of the online shopping that happens in India only takes place because of discounts,” one such company executive told us on background. “If Snapdeal is going to cut the payoff by such a huge amount, then why does it make sense to drive their business? They’re a huge part of the ecosystem, so no one is openly talking about this, but all the top companies are hurting from Snapdeal’s decision, and we have been lobbying them for months now.”

Another person we spoke to who is also in the ecosystem told Gadgets 360, “some people have tried to cut private deals, but we believe we have more of a chance if we talk to Snapdeal collectively. I can tell you that Flipkart’s revenues have shot up, but whether that will make the difference…”

However, others we spoke to say as long as Flipkart and Amazon don’t follow Snapdeal’s lead, it’s not going to become a fault-line in the industry. “India is a very viable model to pre-qualify traffic,” says Raj Ramaswamy, CEO and co-founder ShopInSync. “When there is competition [like in India] the cost of traffic gets higher. Affiliates pre-qualify traffic, so you’re only paying for conversions.”

At the same time, Ramaswamy says that he doesn’t think the issue is one of profit margins. “Margin pressure is likely not behind this decision,” he says, “because there are much better ways to address that issue. There will be some strategic reasons behind this decision. But another thing to remember is that these are not blanket terms. Most people will have their own deals.” Each of the companies gets a deal that’s similar to the public terms but as Ramaswamy points out, this is something that is negotiable, and each company can potentially get a better deal from the e-commerce sites.

Looking at the international perspective though, it’s clear there is precedent for this happening around the world. In the US, Amazon has over the years significantly reduced its payouts – looking at the Internet Archive, you can see that the rate was typically around 15 percent in many categories even in 2012, but now it’s down to 4 percent for electronics, and just 1 percent for video game consoles. The highest commission is on game downloads, and Amazon Coins, both of which pay 10 percent; Amazon also cut ties with affiliates in many states in the US to avoid taxes.

One thing that became increasingly clear, when talking to the people involved, is that the model has to evolve beyond just finding the best deals, and by doing this, the companies will be able to offer something unique as well. “Discounts are a race to the bottom, and there’s no future in that, we want to offer some real value beyond just the deals,” one person says. “Benefits and discounts will peter out,” adds Ramaswamy, “and it’s the convenience that keeps you shopping online. So affiliates also have to offer more than just discounts.”

Disclosure: Gadgets 360’s e-commerce marketplace could be considered a competition for the likes of Snapdeal, Flipkart, and Amazon.

Why affiliate marketing has attracted $4 billion in recent investment

February 14, 2016, 9:12 AM

The acquisitions of three major affiliate marketing companies reflects the channel’s role in driving online sales.

Lead Photo

As the new chief strategy officer for Ebay Enterprise Marketing Solutions, it’s my job to recognize the leading edge of industry trends and map the way forward. As a company, we are intent on further legitimizing affiliate as the ideal payment model in online marketing, but first we must dispel some myths and highlight differences between the shadowy underworld of affiliate marketing and the major emerging players in the space.

If you’ve been in the industry for any length of time then you are probably aware that some segments, especially those running CPA [cost per acquisition] models, have been marked with a less than stellar reputation from those outside the immediate echo chamber. Many consumers and marketing professionals like to label them as a bunch of cookie-stuffing, malware-foisting, disclosure-avoiding, get-rich-quick, rule-bending crooks, while those running CPS [cost per sale] models are rumored to be focused on promo code and loyalty affiliates. (Cost per sale means the advertiser pays the affiliate fee if the consumer makes a purchase; cost per acquisition means the advertiser pays if the prospect takes other steps, such as signs up for more information or applies for a credit card.) While these assessments are not entirely unfounded, the industry as a whole has grown up and worked hard towards earning the respect of the larger marketing world. The morally questionable side of affiliate marketing is now a largely isolated minority, and the major players in CPS are beginning to take steps to improve affiliate mix and ROAS [return on ad spend] for more savvy merchants who expect more from the channel.

This has resulted in the larger marketing world waking up and realizing, OMG, there’s real, legitimate money to be made here. The proof is in the purchase; all you have to do is take a look at the recent merger and acquisition activity that’s occurred.

Commission Junction (and all its subsidiaries) were acquired by digital marketing firm Conversant (formerly known as ValueClick) which was then acquired by data marketer Alliance Data for $2.3 billion. Ebates was then acquired by Japanese ecommerce firm, Rakuten, for $1 billion. And, most recently, eBay Enterprise Marketing Solutions acquired our own AffiliateTraction, which combined, were acquired by investment firms Banneker Partners and Permira Funds for $985 million.

In all, that’s over $4 billion invested in a space that many have traditionally labeled the black sheep of the online marketing world and thats only the transactions where the amounts where publicized. That kind of money doesn’t get thrown around by large companies without some serious forethought and ample confidence of return on investment

More broadly, Forrester has predicted affiliate marketing spend will hit $4.5 billion in 2016. In addition, predictive analytics e-commerce firm Custora says affiliate marketing will affect 14% of all e-commerce purchases in the United States. Couple that with Forrester’s prediction that 2016 US ecommerce sales will hit $279 billion and you’ve got affiliate marketing affecting $39 billion in sales.

I think we can all agree at this juncture that affiliate marketing is serious business, and with serious business there comes a need to provide big brands with the strategic advisement they are used to receiving from their consultants in the “regular” marketing world.

Don’t just take my word for it. In a recent PerformanceIn article, Affiliate Window US Country Manager Alexandra Forsch said, “There is a strong demand for informed and consultative account management, which is often overlooked. Brands still need reassurances that the affiliate channel can deliver the right types of sales for them.”

As I step into my new role as chief strategy officer of eBay Enterprise Marketing Solutions, I’ll be doing my part to help position the affiliate marketing space in a light indicative of the spending and investment dollars that have rallied behind the industry.

Remember, 14% or $39 billion of ecommerce will be affected by affiliate marketing. Compare that to the 17% of ecommerce affected by email and 19% of ecommerce affected by organic search. Affiliate marketing is no longer just a curious sideshow. It’s now an integral, front-and-center component of every brand’s marketing mix.

Yes, affiliate marketing is on the move, and there’s no stopping it from proudly taking its rightful seat at the table. Stay tuned because it’s going to get interesting.

What's Old Is New Again: Why Affiliate Marketing Is Growing

affiliate-marketing-ss-1920

As the year comes to a close, I can’t help but think about all of the changes that have taken place over the past 12 months in our industry — things like the shift toward online to offine, and the list goes on.

There’s no doubt that 2015 has been the most innovative and interesting year of my career. The conversations and top headlines have really helped me home in on what it is that I enjoy so much about my job and the marketing channel I’ve worked in for 12 years.

It’s also led me to share my definition of what affiliate marketing really means, why it’s growing and how I believe it should be viewed. There are some consistent themes that resonate with both e-commerce companies and consumers, all at a seemingly perfect time when marketers are looking for a more organic way to drive sales.

Original, Native Content

The content on affiliate sites is the original native content. With affiliate marketing, products, brands and promotions are seamlessly embedded into the editorial content on a publisher site.

As I like to say, it’s content marketing before content marketing was a thing.

For advertisers, it’s a no-brainer: Each has a network of publisher partners all promoting the brand, sale and/or product which, at the most basic level, is beautiful, native advertising that acts as brand awareness — and at best, reaches an entirely new customer base while driving incremental revenue. Win-win!

Community

The great thing about publishers in our space is that they create their own unique audience of loyal consumers who trust them and their opinions. I’m not just talking about loyalty sites either — bloggers, coupon sites and editorial news outlets all have their own communities that play a part in the ecosystem.

What’s really happening here is you have brand advocates that produce content based on their experience with your products or service or who are looking to promote a product or a deal and essentially act as trusted third-party validators for brands. Publishers are influencers that can reach new and existing customers with their native content to attract their loyal community to a brand.

Publishers provide value and influence through their communities, regardless of the size. Trust drives action, and affiliate marketing provides the platform in which it all comes together.

Social Influence

Social media has changed the speed at which people receive and consume information. Through social media and other online publications, affiliate publishers can ensure the right message gets to the right person at the right time by leveraging the following they have.

When advertisers have specific goals or objectives for particular products, brands or promotions, they have the ability, through the relationships with affiliate publishers to leverage that community of users, to quickly get reach and influence at scale.

I believe this is a unique value proposition that affiliate publishers bring to our ecosystem.

This doesn’t come at the cost of the publisher’s integrity or fear of losing readers based on misleading or disruptive advertising. Publishers can maintain a balanced approach of the ads and products that are meaningful to their consumers as they maintain the control of where, when and how they want to advertise their partners.

Partnerships

As we all know, affiliate marketing is predicated on relationships and partnerships. It’s an ecosystem, and all parties are equally dependent on each other to achieve success.

It’s the only digital marketing channel that’s reliant on actual relationships established between parties with a mutually beneficial goal.

The most successful programs are based on the right strategy and a strong, effective relationship. Publishers understand the importance of creating long-term, productive partnerships with their advertiser partners, while advertisers recognize that these publishers provide the opportunity to reach new and loyal customers.

Data

What good are any of these other themes if it’s impossible to measure success? Affiliate marketing programs provide a 360-degree view of an entire campaign.

The data offers both advertisers and publishers ways to identify top partners, assess placement strategies and analyze consumer behavior. Essentially, it’s the layer that supports the platform and enhances the offering.

Because of the cost per action (CPA) model, there are no questions analyzing the ROI from the advertiser’s side — views, impressions, and even clicks aren’t the benchmarks of success. Brands are able to see exactly how much revenue they’ve made and commissions they paid out in a single report.

Further, there’s a new angle on data and a shift happening in our industry. Data is not just about measuring your program, but leveraging it to inform promotions and create the right experience for the right user at the right time on the right site.

In Summary

Over my 12 years working in the industry, I’ve witnessed plenty of advancements and innovative publishers, but these core concepts remain. And that’s why this channel isn’t going anywhere and will continue to grow.

SVAKOM Invites Interested Candidates to Proclaim About Their Affiliate Program

Affiliate Marketing Using Niche Websites, Keywords, and SEO

Section 1: Introduction

Lecture 1

04:19

Welcome to Online Business Breakthrough. If you’ve been thinking of getting into CPA or affiliate marketing, and you’ve wanted to know how to build your own website, this is going to teach you how. Also, if you have wondered about SEO in the past and how it works, I’m going to give you an overview of that as well. Thank you for being here and I’m glad to have you. I hope you learn something through this course and I look forward to your feedback.

This is the foundation you will need to build any site and take it to whatever level you desire. From your website, you can later implement other forms of traffic such as Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, Google Adwords, etc. This is your home base. Your goal is to fill it up with great content, and then get visitors to it. Once you have it set up and monetized, it can generate commissions on its own.

Remember people often say that knowledge is power. That’s not true. Knowledge is only potential power. It only becomes power when their is action applied. This is the knowledge. You have to take the action.

Below is a PDF version of this course that you can download.

To your success,

-Steve

Section 2: Step 1: Product/Niche Selection

Lecture 2

12:57

Before choosing a niche or category of website you want to build, it’s best to make sure there’s a market and people are looking for keywords related to your niche or products you plan on promoting. The possibilities are endless but can range from anything like “dog training” to “learn how to play piano”. You should keep in mind, however, that the more broad a keyword is, the more competitive and difficult it will be to get your site on the first page of Google and get organic visitors.

Also, before making a final decision on the type of website you want to build, it helps if you have experience or knowledge in that area before hand. This is definitely not required but if you’re going to be the one writing the content then it would be that much more enjoyable if you were interested in what you were writing about. If you don’t already have the knowledge you can either research and learn it, or outsource it to someone else and I’ll show you how to do the later.

Section 3: Step 2: Choosing the Right Domain

Lecture 3

07:31

Many people would start with a domain and if you already have a brand or company than that’s fine. It would be wise to get a branded domain for your company so you can establish your online presence. If you don’t have a company or business which most people trying to make money affiliate marketing don’t, the good news is you can think of your own.

You have two options:

  • You can make up your own brand for your website domain.

  • If you know you have no plans to completely build out your site over an extended period of time, you can get a domain that may have your keywords from your niche in there. Maybe something like “www.peanutbutterrecipes.com” if you’re wanting to target keywords and promote offers in the “peanut butter” niche.

Section 4: Step 3: Getting Hosted and Installing WordPress

Lecture 4

15:32

So you know what niche you want to go in and you already found some offers to promote and you have your domain picked out. Now you have to get hosted so people can visit your website.

Think of your domain name as the address of your home and think of your hosting as of the things in your home. You need hosting to have the ability to store all of the posts, pages, content, widgets, images, videos, ads, and anything else you place on your website. I’ll show you how to get hosted and log in to your cpanel so you can add your domain. After you point your DNS settings from your domain registrar, you’ll need to install WordPress.

Every website needs a CMS or content management system. This allows you to move things around, edit content, make changes, create posts, and more. WordPress is one of the most popular due to its simplicity for even those not experienced in web design. I’m going to show you how to install WordPress and which plug ins you’re going to need.

Section 5: Step 4: Keyword Research, Content, and Monetization

Lecture 5

11:52

Before you start writing content it helps to know what you’re audience is looking for. Using Google Keyword Planner, we can see the monthly search volumes and estimate how much traffic a keyword can produce. Find a good long tail keyword with little competition is the goal.

Lecture 6

11:08

You’re going to need content plain and simple. You’ll need content for Google to crawl. You’ll need content for people to read and share. There’s no way around it. If you don’t want to write it that’s ok. You’ll see where you can go and outsource your articles so you don’t have to write them.

Lecture 7

07:05

After you have your content you’re going to want to monetize it so you can make a commission. You can do this by linking an image to your offer, or by using a contextual hyper link in the text. You’ll learn how to do both in this video.

Lecture 8

11:14

You’re going to want to build your site our so it looks legit. You want people to see your site as an authority and trust what you have to say. That comes down to presentation and content. Both of those require you to build out your site so in this video you’re going to learn how to create multiple pages, use categories for posts, and add widgets in the sidebar.

Section 6: Step 5: Auto responder and Landing Page

Lecture 9

06:57

It’s a well known fact that most people don’t buy on their first encounter with an ad or product. However, what if you had a way to follow up with that person later? That’s where your list comes in. By having a list of subscribers, it gives you the ability to make commissions just by sending out an email. To do that, you’re going to need an autoresponder.

In this video, you’ll learn how to sign up for an autoresponder and integrate it into your website so you can capture emails and start building a list.

Lecture 10

13:04

You can capture people’s email by using a web form on your website, or by having a landing or “squeeze” page set up. When someone clicks on a link, it takes them to a page that usually offers something an exchange for an email. I’ll show you how you can quickly create a landing page ready for visitors.

Section 7: Step 6: Traffic – SEO Overview (search engines give us free traffic)

Lecture 11

13:19

I love SEO and since it means you can get free traffic, that’s even better. The reality is that if you don’t have money to waste testing different traffic sources then you can never really get traffic. To “drive” traffic to a website or page requires money to spend on advertising. Since most aspiring affiliate marketers are trying to make some extra money online, they probably don’t have thousands of dollars to spare. That’s why I’m showing you SEO. When you know SEO you’re unstoppable and have an overwhelming advantage over the competition.

Lecture 12

08:08

This video continues into SEO or search engine optimization. Another beautiful thing about SEO compared to traditional advertising is that when you start ranking pages in the search engines and getting traffic, you continue to get that traffic every month as long as your page stays there. Then you can focus on finding more keywords and creating more content to bring more visitors.

Section 8: Step 7: Communication and Follow Up

Lecture 13

12:05

So the hard part is done. Well it wasn’t really that hard was it? When it’s broken down into steps anything can be easily learned. The final video in this course is about following up and communicating with your list of subscribers. Remember, some people didn’t opt in for your CPA offer or buy your digital product you are promoting, so luckily if they subscribed to your list, you can follow up with them later and possibly make a sale then. In addition, you can always promote more offers to your list whenever you want. Don’t do it too much though. In this video I’ll explain a couple tips to help you keep subscribers on your list a little longer by communicating and delivering value.

Is Affiliate Marketing A Viable Business Model In 2016?

affiliate-marketing-ss-1920

Affiliate marketing has been a long-standing monetization strategy on the web. But can publishers and business owners still find revenue success with it in 2016?

In the early days of online marketing, most big brands struggled to see the yield of investing significant resources in things like SEO and paid search. The early SERP landscape consisted mainly of nimble small businesses and affiliate marketers who recognized the web’s potential as a significant revenue stream.

The original model for affiliate sites was simple: Find a product to promote; find the top 50 keywords for the niche; write 50 pages of technically unique content centered around those keywords and build a website around the program.

As a career affiliate, I can admit those websites had little to no unique value to the consumer by today’s standards. The value these websites had back then was in connecting consumers searching for a product and the underlying brand that sold it — that typically had no search presence themselves.

But big brands began to become enlightened in the mid-2000s. They started to invest more and more budget into online marketing initiatives, while Google slowly moved to favoring them in the search results. Blogs were undergoing a metamorphosis — evolving from glorified online diaries to significant sources of valuable content with increasingly large readerships.

At the same time, it was rumored that Google was actively looking to demote affiliate websites that were using the dated framework in both their organic and paid results.

Affiliates who couldn’t see or move past the old model dropped out of the game. Some of us went on to adapt to the new position of the bar and began to build stand-alone resources that promoted affiliate programs versus building a low-value — and no longer needed — bridge between consumers and brands in the search results.

In reality, the supposed death of affiliate marketing was more of a shift that necessitated more mature efforts and increased resources to find success.

This shift is illustrated perfectly with a quote by author and entrepreneur Seth Godin on his blog: “You don’t find customers for your products. You find products for your customers.”

That was the new strategy affiliate marketers had to embrace and implement to continue to thrive.

So what does the 2016 blueprint for a successful affiliate marketing model look like? A good example can be found in Gawker Media.

Gawker Media And Its Execution Of Affiliate Marketing

Gawker Media is the producer of multiple well-known publications on the web, boasting more than 64 million users per month across its network of sites, which include Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Deadspin and Gawker.com.

Gawker Media didn’t start out with the monetization model of affiliate marketing. Until a few years ago, the publishing powerhouse derived its revenue from display advertising and sponsored content.

But in a world of declining ad viewability rates and ad blockers, it would appear Gawker Media went in search of additional revenue streams — and found affiliate marketing.

Gawker Media flawlessly executes the premise in Godin’s quote. For example, Gizmodo has a large readership looking for information on the latest in technology. And Gizmodo delivers content that is high-quality and informative. The affiliate links within that content are independent and don’t detract from the core value of the content.

I’d argue that a link to the product being featured is helpful to the user. Assuming the validity of the content is not influenced by whether or not an affiliate program exists for the product being discussed, that link being affiliated is without detriment to the user.

Gawker Media’s Lifehacker site centers around solving problems people experience in everyday life. They identify a problem, solve the problem and include an affiliate link to where the user can purchase the solution, when applicable.

In concept, Gawker Media’s content is created to inform, and then they monetize within it where possible. I say “in concept” because I’m sure that their content strategy is not entirely uninfluenced by their ability to monetize it. But the important aspect is that the content their sites produce would still have relevance, purpose and value to a user without being monetized.

Their heavy utilization of the Amazon affiliate program allows them to remain somewhat neutral in their recommendations, as well. It’s hard to mention a product these days that Amazon doesn’t sell, which helps lessen any temptation for publishers to promote one product over another due to the ability to affiliate it.

How Profitable Might Affiliate Marketing Be For The Gawker Media Network?

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal took a look at how Gawker Media was using affiliate marketing to “bring in millions selling headphones, chargers and flashlights.” Gawker Media founder and CEO Nick Denton was quoted in the article as declaring the company’s affiliate marketing efforts “a valuable second revenue stream.”

But that article only lightly touched on the potential impact of affiliate marketing to Gawker Media’s bottom line. From the article:

As for the Velcro ties, 31,535 readers have purchased a 100-pack on Amazon, which currently run for $4.99. That’s $157,000 in cable ties, which could add $6,300 into Gawker’s coffers, assuming a 4% cut.

Assuming a four-percent cut may be underestimating the overall commission rate the media giant averages. Amazon’s commission structure consists of multiple classes of commission rates. Certain product categories have fixed commission rates, while commissions on General Products start at four percent and can go up to 8.5 percent, depending on sales volume.

While Gawker Media likely does a large volume of sales in the fixed-rate commission category of Electronics (four percent), the article fails to look at Gawker Media’s commission potential outside of its direct affiliate links to specific products.

The Amazon affiliate program has a 24-hour cookie, which means that once users click on an affiliate link to Amazon, anything they buy in the next 24 hours is commissionable to the affiliate whose link they last clicked. So if you click on Gawker’s affiliate link to Amazon to look at cable ties and end up buying another, unrelated product, Gawker Media still receives a commission for that sale.

If Gawker Media is selling more than 3,131 of General Products, then their commission rate on those General Products moves up to 8.5 percent. With 64 million+ users per month, it’s probably a safe bet to assume Gawker Media is in the top tier of Amazon’s commission structure for any sales they make in the General Products category.

Additionally, Gawker Media makes use of Skimlinks to affiliate any links they’re not taking the time to affiliate directly themselves.

Skimlinks is something of a master affiliate network. Their technology allows them to check the links on a participating publisher’s page, cross-reference that with their database of 20,000+ affiliate programs and see if the site being linked to by the publisher has an affiliate program. If it does, Skimlinks automatically affiliates the link for you and credits you with any commissions resulting from the link.

Skimlinks takes a cut of the commission for providing the service. The standard split is 25/75,with the publisher getting paid 75 percent of the commissions earned. And I’ve seen companies smaller than Gawker Media negotiate better splits with similar companies as a result of sending larger-than-average volume in the past.

Figuring out how much money Gawker Media is taking home from affiliate marketing is a complicated task. Assuming a four-percent take solely on the sales they openly list in their Amazon widgets on their network is probably a severe underestimation.

Fueling the suspected level of increasing importance that affiliate marketing has pertaining to Gawker Media’s revenue is its discernible investment into their implementation of it.

The Amazon widgets Gawker Media uses to display their affiliate offers showing the number of readers who bought the item are not default Amazon widgets, and some of the data contained within them is not data that is readily available in the Amazon API, either.

Gawker

Longtime affiliate marketer and co-founder of Shareist Scott Jangro suspects that Gawker Media’s Amazon widgets are custom-built. “It looks like they’ve built a system allowing them to capture data that gives them full-circle reporting on what’s getting bought, through which page, and possibly even by user,” he told me. “Showing a count of purchased products for social proof is just one of the many things they can do with this data.”

Gawker Media’s presumably home-grown widgets are utilizing Google Analytics Event Tracking, which further points to Gawker Media putting in a noteworthy effort to track their affiliate efforts on a granular level.

Gawker Media’s sites also make use of Amazon Sub-tag tracking, a feature only afforded to select publishers that allows them to “monitor and optimize the performance of your Special Links by including different sub-tags in the URLs of different Special Links.”

Gizmodo source for Amazon integration

And recent Ad and Commerce Operations job postings by the company state that the position entails “develop[ing] interesting new revenue sources for the company, helping to expand our successful e-commerce campaigns (which have driven approximately $160m in sales to partners)” and include the notation that “experience with commerce-oriented ad APIs (e.g., Amazon Product Advertising API)” is something that’s nice for applicants to have.

Requests for direct comment from Gawker Media surrounding their use of and investment into affiliate marketing went unanswered. But investing into custom platforms and granular data collection doesn’t seem like something a publisher the size of Gawker Media would be doing unless it were a central part of their current and future overall monetization strategy.

The Continued Growth Of Affiliate Marketing As An Advertising Channel

There’s a reason larger-scale publishers are starting to embrace affiliate marketing as a viable revenue stream. Affiliate marketing as a general industry has seen consistent growth over the last five years.

A study conducted by Forrester Research on behalf of LinkShare concluded that “US affiliate marketing spending will increase by a compounded annual growth rate of nearly 17% between 2011 and 2016, growing to $4.5 billion.”

The majority of “affiliate marketing spend” in the US is in the form of commissions paid out to affiliates, both directly from the merchant and through affiliate networks. The study further claims that buyers through affiliate channels spend more money than the average online shopper.

With Google AdSense showing a decline in revenues being paid out to publishers, and display ad viewability rates falling in an increasingly mobile world, it’s no wonder publishers of every size are looking for potential revenue streams to fill that widening gap.

What Affiliate Endeavors By Large-Scale Publishers Mean For Affiliate Marketing

The acceptance and open implementation of affiliate marketing by a large-scale publisher like Gawker Media has both pros and cons for their smaller-scale counterparts.

As affiliate marketing emerges as a viable native advertising alternative for traditionally display-funded larger publishers, the competition in obtaining affiliate sales will increase. The challengers for affiliate marketing revenue will be stronger in terms of technology and resources.

The bar for what kind of sales volume allows you to negotiate higher commissions from merchants will likely be raised.

But amid the cons, we also stand to see some positive effects on the industry. The adoption of affiliate marketing by larger publishers could help increase the level of acceptance of affiliate monetization models by users as encountering affiliate disclaimers becomes a more regular occurrence.

Larger publishers with more substantial budgets also are positioned to be able to promote innovations that smaller publishers can replicate.

More merchants may see the benefit in launching affiliate programs in hopes of getting exposure on larger-scale websites, which could also result in increased program availability for smaller publishers. It might also force bigger dogs into the fight against the affiliate tax.

But larger and smaller publishers have historically been able to coexist in the display advertising world. I believe they can do so in the affiliate marketing arena, too.

One thing is for sure: Affiliate marketing is still a viable business model.
