11 Free Tools You Should Use for Effective Online Market Research

Now with digital marketing, effective market research is no longer limited to big companies with big budgets. Small and medium-sized companies can also perform extensive market research using free or affordable digital tools.

To help small businesses conduct market research using effective digital tools, here are 11 tools you should use:

  1. LinkedIn: Use this professional social networking website to learn about the corporate backgrounds of prospects and find shared connections who might help make an introduction. Search LinkedIn profiles of competing brands and their staff to find connections to important clients and suppliers. You can also find employees who are about to leave their companies – they’re generally very active in updating their profiles or seeking recommendations.

  2. Job Posting Sites: See which kind of job postings a company has. You can often figure out their business strategy or plans based on the positions they hire and which locations are hiring.

  3. Wayback Machine: This tool shows historical snapshots of websites so you can determine how their brand or marketing strategy has evolved over time.

  4. Data.com: Data.com is a crowd-sourced online business directory with information for more than 29 million contacts from over 4 million companies. You can find the contact information for key people you want to connect with by trading with other members.

  5. Google Trends: Use Google trends to estimate product demand for a particular market and to assess brand awareness of competitive products or services.

  6. Google Alerts: Set up Google Alerts to notify you whenever competitor names or keywords related to your industry come up on social media.

  7. SEC Edgar’s Database and SEDAR: This website lets you find financial information and filings for public companies.

  8. PRNewswire and PRWeb: Use PRNewswire and PRWeb to go through online press releases for news regarding your customers and competitors. You can even expand the list to do research on their customers and vendors.

  9. WhoIS: Use WhoIS to find the contact information of the people behind microsites and content sites. Sometimes you may discover that a review site is actually another form of content marketing performed by a digital agency.

  10. Quora: Check what kind of questions a company’s staff have answered or asked – on Q &A site Quora. This is a site where users are required to to register with their real names and user profiles.

  11. Slideshare: Find corporate and individual sales presentations that staff members from your competitors have uploaded to share online.

Finding the right platform mix to maximise market reach: 5 things you should know

hand-472244_1920

Experienced digital marketers who have used social media marketing, email marketing and employee advocacy platforms know the pros and cons of each environment. They understand what works well and what doesn’t and how one environment’s shortcoming can be countered by another to maximise the benefits from their digital marketing efforts. In this context, I have provided five reasons how the above-mentioned platforms complement one another.

1. Your target clients’ preferences

You can have the best marketing plan in history and share the best content but you cannot force your target clients to use specific platforms. There are individuals who love Twitter but steer clear of LinkedIn and vice versa. There are those who are not interested in subscribing to your email newsletter, however they are more than happy to receive content from a known person through your employee advocacy platform. Find out where most of your clients and prospects are and engage and interact with them accordingly.

2. Who owns your content?

Imaging this scenario. A company decides to only use LinkedIn. Their thought leaders connect with clients and prospects and publish blog posts from the LinkedIn publishing platform on a regular basis. Overnight, the LinkedIn share price plunges, the company closes its doors, together with your staff member’s networks and your company’s collective thought leadership. It is best to keep all your content on your company website and/or blog.

3. Nurturing prospects

Social media platforms are great to make connections and get followers, share content and convert communities. They are not, however, good at enabling you to share and interact with targetted audiences in a private, personal manner. If you are attempting to nurture a few thousand prospects in a personalised manner, you have to do this individually on social media (direct messages on Twitter and messages on LinkedIn). An opted-in email channel, with categorised subscribers which can be filtered, can manage this easily.

4. Democratising to staff members

There are numerous case studies that bear testament to the fact that a well implemented and managed employee advocacy platform is highly beneficial for business-to-business and business-to-consumer companies. 1000 staff members each with an average of 100 social media connections represents a potential reach of 100 000 people. Daily posts on an employee advocacy platform results in millions of social media shares, likes, comments and impressions and results in increased brand awareness, offline engagement and revenue.

5. Open rates and social media feeds

All marketers know that irrespective of the channel used, only a percentage of your email subscribers, social media connections and staff member’s individual contacts will view your content. There are many factors that affect this. Even though an email reached an inbox, it does not mean it will be read. Global email open rates are around 24%. Social media followers and connections do not monitor their social media feeds on a continual basis either. A mix of your corporate social media posts, personalised email and shares by staff members with their personal networks will ensure maximum exposure of your company’s thought leadership.

Do you have anything to add? Do you have any comments? I welcome your feedback.

The new niches in China's ecommerce market

China gets a new unicorn as Rakuten takes stake in discount estore Fanli

Alibaba’s sales is only 5 percent of total retail in China and JD.com’s sales of electronics products represent about 2 percent to 5 percent of total electronics retail as well, according to Dangdang.com’s CEO Li Guoqing.

If you only looking at the Chinese ecommerce giants’ recent financial report, most of people would agree that the competition has settled because Alibaba alone has accounted for about 80 percent of the market share in online shopping sales. The combined sales from Alibaba and JD.com have close to about 90 percent of the Chinese online retail market.

However, at least one executive of a Chinese e-retailer thinks the position of those leaders is not secure. “The size of the business is not equal to competitive advantage and competitive threshold.  The market will be settled only if the marketing leaders have some unique edges and generate difficult barriers to entry,” says Li Guoqing, cofounder and CEO of Dangdang.com, in a speech in One Thousand Ecommerce Professionals Seminar in China:

Alibaba’s sales only account for about 5% of retail sales of China and that is not a enough barrier to entry. At same time, JD.com’s electronics sales only represent 2% to 5% sales of electronics products in China. If some companies get a right new business model, there are still plenty of chances to beat those current leaders.

Li says people seldom know Vipshop, the number 4 internet retailer China 500, and Yhd.com, the number 7 internet retailer China 500, three years ago, but now they have become ecommerce leaders in their categories in China.

In other words, new horizons may be coming for niches within China’s ecommerce market in the same way that we see companies like Warby Parker and Zappos coming up in the USA. Keep on a lookout for these small well-branded niche companies in China, while you look past the big guys like Alibaba and JD.

New PM boss learns lessons: start small and market hard

A rookie principal has established a strong Facebook following and also focused on building his new agency’s rent roll to offset a soft sales market.

Celebrating his company’s first anniversary, Raine & Horne Muswellbrook director Grant Jupe said he’s fulfilling a dream by running his own business despite tough market conditions.

“We’ve had to learn to hit the ground running, market hard and come into a difficult market and get our market share during tough times,” Mr Jupe told RPM.

He said the slow sales market was caused by reduced mining activity near Muswellbrook, which is 180 kilometres north of Sydney.

“We’ve worked on building our rent roll, which has gotten very strong over the past 12 months, so we’ve really put our focus on that while sales have been a bit quieter.”

According to Mr Jupe, the company has run several marketing campaigns at a local level to help establish the brand, particularly within the digital space.

“We actually have the most highly followed and interacted Facebook page of all the agents in town,” he said.

“We’re also using the original method of print media and letterbox dropping, so we try to cover all bases.”

In setting up his own company, Mr Jupe has emphasised the importance of doing adequate research and setting realistic goals.

“We’ve exceeded our goals and expectations in the early months, as it’s always better to aim for a smaller scale when starting a new business,” he said.

“You can then reach those goals and even use those achievements in your marketing, like we did.”

Mr Jupe said setting up a franchise business was the right way for him, since it offered instant brand recognition in the local area.

“I always had my heart set on going with a franchise rather than going independent, because of the support, training and network that comes with a franchise,” he said.

One key thing that helped Mr Jupe in establishing his business is familiarity with the area and the market.

“I’d already been working in real estate in this area, so I had ongoing knowledge as an active agent and I was fairly familiar with the market and the other agents in town.”

The most popular products on Romania's e-commerce market

Fashion and IT&C products, as well as books and teaching materials, were the most popular items on Romania’s e-commerce market in the first half of the year. Romanians also purchased home & deco products and cosmetics, according to an analysis of Romanian affiliate marketing network 2Parale.

Compared to the same period in 2014, Romanians spent more online on IT&C products in the first six months of 2015.

Between January and June, Romanians spent an average of RON 1,000 (EUR 225) on a tourism package, RON 630 (EUR 141) on an IT&C product, RON 220 (EUR 50) on a product from the home & deco sector, and RON 215 (EUR 48) for baby items.

Books and teaching materials, fashion, and insurance industries performed best in terms of number of online sales recorded within the platform.

In the first half of 2015, the largest acquisition made by a Romanian on the 2Parale platform amounted to some RON 33,000 (over EUR 7,400), almost double compared to the RON 17,000 ( some EUR 3,800) registered in the same period in 2014.

On average, a Romanian spent RON 160 (EUR 36) online, similar to the previous year.

Romanians like to make online purchases in the morning, between 7:00 and 12:00, according to 2Parale. They also make online shopping between 13:00 and 18:00.

In terms of days, most of the online purchases were made on Thursdays, followed closely by Wednesdays and Tuesdays.

Romanian mainly searched for dresses and smartphones in the first half of the year, according to Google Trends data. Compared to 2014, Romanians searched more products based on brands.

Performance marketing company 2Performant Network S.A. registered a turnover of some RON 3.68 million (EUR 828,000) in the first half of 2015, up 25% year-on-year. 2Performant Network owns 2Parale brand in Romania.

The 2parale platform had 450 clients in the first half of the year, 100 more than in the same period the previous year. Earlier this year, the company announced its expansion in Central and Eastern Europe, through the launch of the 2Performant platform in Bulgaria.

Pneumatic Components Market 2019-2021 Forecasts in New Research Reports

CashKaro may rope in 50 global retailers to India market

NEW DELHI: Online cashback and coupon site CashKaro.com is planning to list about 50 global retailers over the next six months, according to one of its founders, as the company seeks to strengthen its position in the Indian market.

About two months ago, CashKaro had signed a collaboration deal with Alibaba.com Wholesale one of the largest online market places. Among the retailers likely to feature on CashKaro are US-headquartered Macy’s, Banana Republic, Bloomingdale’s, Victoria’s Secret and Gap.

The UK sites could include River Island, Lookfantastic. com, BeautyExpert.com and House of Fraser, said Swati Bhargava, CashKaro’s co-founder. CashKaro, set up in mid 2013 by Swati and Rohan Bhargava, offers cashback and free coupons for more than 500 online shopping sites, including Amazon.in, Snapdeal, Paytm, Flipkart, Groupon, Jabong, Homeshop18, LensKart and FabFurnish.

The company, which competes with Pennyful and Cazbak, has been clocking average sales of Rs 45 crore every month for these shopping sites, Bhargava said. Till date, it has credited aboutRs 10 crore as cashback to users.

The company has registered a month-on-month growth of 30-40% in revenue, Bhargava said. “We want to be Fanli.com of China. Today, we see that e-commerce is one of the popular ways for global brands to test the India market,” said Bhargava.

Fanli.com is China’s largest discount site with about 70 million registered users. In April, Fanli had raised over $1 billion from Japanese ecommerce titan Rakuten. CashKaro has 500,000 registered members.

In an email interaction earlier, David Jaffe, affiliate marketing manager at The Hut Group UK’s leading multi-website online retailer which is in talks with CashKaro, had said, “We generally have good experiences with cashback sites as it’s a performance based model with a high RoI ratio. We tend to offer higher than base commission rates in order to secure newsletter, homepage and banner space, since cashback sites are targeted and have a high conversion rate.”

The online UK retailer has been associated with Pouring Pounds, the UK-based cashback and vouchers site run by CashKaro, for more than three years, and thus CashKaro was the obvious choice as affiliate partner for the Indian market.

Global Marketing Automation Software Market 2015-2019

How to Market Your Business While Traveling the World

The saying goes, “The world is my oyster.” In this case, it’s also the billboard for marketing your business while you are city or country hopping. Keep in mind that effective marketing doesn’t just happen in one place and rarely emerges from a cubicle.

I was recently on an amazing cruise with my wife in the Caribbean. During this time, I was forced to work on cruise Wi-Fi as well as internet hotspots. I was able to live the life I wanted while traveling the world… all while marketing my company online. It actually grew ten percent while I was gone.

Marketing that works comes from keeping your finger on the pulse of the consumer or business you are trying to attract. To stay with the market trends means getting out of the office and into the trenches, in my case, onto the beaches for a while. You have to know what your business really needs, potentially see it from a different perspective.

These tools have allowed me to market wherever I happen to be in the world:

  1. SMM-ile and Your Audience Returns the Favor: Social Media Marketing (SMM) platforms like LinkedIn, Google+, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are always on and available and ready to accept relevant content and engaging responses to your target audience. Somewhere in the world, someone is awake and tuned in, searching for fresh information that can help them solve a problem or just to provide them with a different way of looking at information for their business or life.

  2. Blog City Journaling: Even in longer forms, content can be created and shared no matter where you are in the world. It can be written or it can be video, but either way it’s one of the best ways to reach your audience and no one has to know where you are when it was created. Then again, the idea that the marketing messages are coming from new experiences and even exotic locales can enrich your marketing campaigns and keep people tuning in to see where you will be next, and what you’re up to. Using a location to create custom marketing messages sends a bigger message about the product or service’s relevance and connection to the global community while also serving as the basis for an interesting video or content blog.

  3. The Email Marketing Stepchild Deserves Love, Too: E-mail marketing does not have to become the stepchild of today’s online marketing capability. Platforms like Constant Contact and ExactTarget serve as an important and meaningful way to communicate with an audience plus it is a tool that works anywhere in the world.

  4. Many Marketing Birds and One Stone: You can only do so many things in the day and posting marketing content on multiple platforms may not be possible or necessarily efficient. That’s why there are marketing tools — like HootSuite and TweetDeck — that do the legwork for you so your billboard is flashing at all hours — even if you are in-flight or between Wi-Fi connections. For every one marketing message created, these solutions launch it across the social media sea to create the desired ripple effect.

  5. Face-to-Face Networking: With technology running the show, it’s easy to forget those traditional marketing methods, such as face-to-face marketing, which actually worked quite well in terms of building trust and rapport with your target audience. Traveling allows you to meet with many people you would not otherwise see and even if you don’t directly talk about your product or service, the meaningful conversation you have and how you interact with those you meet are still marketing tools at work. Take advantage of this opportunity by planning time in your schedule for in-person networking to build authentic relationships.

Just because your business keeps you on the road doesn’t mean you can’t successfully promote your business. Do you travel a lot? What other strategies do you use to network and market on the go?

New farmers market begins June 3

New player in gourmet coffee market, The Flying Squirrel targets serious coffee drinkers

In The Flying Squirrel plantations in Coorg, long rows of coffee bushes poke out their branches with red swinging cherries. Founder Ashish Dabreo defines their cultivation “a combination of science and art.” In the fields,  vanilla, citrus, banana, spice, and cardamom patches nourish the coffee with their aroma. Machines wash and pulp cherries; big pools collect them at various stages of fermentation to create different textures and characters; and billion of beans are poured on vast brick yards for drying, raked in multiple cycles.

Yourstory_Flying_Squirrel_1

Experimenting is one of the magic ingredients of the company, which produces and sells high quality coffee. The passion that grows coffee and fuel the company has its roots in a childhood spent in Mangalore, where friends and relatives use to gift coffee beans from their estates. “Drives up to the estates every few months for holidays or weddings were all contributors to our early coffee indoctrination,” says Ashish.

Yourstory_Flying_Squirrel_7

After innumerable cups of coffee, Ashish decided to start up a company in 2011 because good quality coffee in India was hard to find. “When we began R&D on cultivation and blending there were not many significant online players in the market selling non mass-packaged freshly roasted and ground coffee,” says Ashish. Since they started, the team has been very particular about the consumers they want to target: not those who look for their ‘caffeine fix’ or their ‘morning jolt’, but those who are ‘serious coffee drinkers’.

Two years later, The Flying Squirrel sold its first batch of coffee. “In the two years that we took for product development a few brands began retailing online. In the last six months there has been a surge in online coffee brands,” remarks Ashish.

Yourstory_Flying_Squirrel_2

“Unlike a lot of our competitors, we grow our own coffee as we have been doing so for generations,” he adds. Ashish’s college friend Tej, who is now a farmer, takes care of coffee from its growth till its drying in Coorg before the beans are sent for roasting and packaging to Bangalore. He continues, “Tej works on the farm and is one of the most passionate growers one would have the privilege of talking to. He has an in-depth knowledge of coffee cultivation  and a very contemporary approach to technology. This and our innovative methods to get exciting bean profiles, makes us unique.” The rest of the team has expertise in branding, design, digital marketing and advertising which matches with and completes the farming skills.

Yourstory_Flying_Squirrel_3

Ashish tells us that “the market potential is immense, as palates of consumers get more sophisticated. Coffee is soon becoming a lifestyle drink and The Flying Squirrel is here to help in this transition. We are about the hundreds of nuances that good coffee has to offer and today we create these nuances for a discerning drinker.”

Yourstory_Flying_Squirrel_6

Most of the company’s sales happen online,“as that’s the quickest way to get freshly roasted and ground coffee delivered to our customers,” explains Ashish, “We don’t intend to be present in large format supermarket chains, except for a few smaller ones who stock limited but well curated gourmet products and where we can maintain smaller inventory. Institutional sale is also a big revenue stream for us as offices, airport lounges, and hotels see value in offering luxury beverages such as ours to their clientele / visitors as opposed to the currently available one-size-fits-all products.”

Yourstory_Flying_Squirrel_4

The team argues they learnt “way too much” throughout their journey. “Everyday we learn something. Consumer behavior, market realities, the impact of weather on crops, interpreting Google analytics, the subtle differences between drying on brick yards or elevated frames, leveraging social media, the importance of timely collections, making the shift towards mobile-heavy e-commerce, the immense red tape that we have to cut through to get any one of the million prescribed license.” He continues, “The list is literally endless, but if we were to absolutely pin it down, I think our biggest learning would have to be the art of patience.”

Yourstory_Flying_Squirrel_5

The Flying Squirrel is now facing two main challenges. The first is to cope with the fast growing competition, but Ashish adds that this has its advantages because “it helps us  remain constantly innovative and on our toes and enables an expansion in the market.” The other point is that the company wants to remain niche, but not elite and penetration is quite an issue. “Since we don’t have – and don’t want to have – large marketing budgets, expanding our customer base will always be an issue. The cost of acquisition per customer in the digital space for this kind of a product is quite high too. So far, word of mouth through genuine customer appreciation has been our biggest marketing tool.”
