Tomas Saulsbury-Hunter, Key Account Manager, CJ Affiliate by Conversant - Shares Insights

Our profile feature takes a look at some of the global professionals working across performance marketing, shedding light on the varying roles and companies across the flourishing industry.  This time we’re turning our focus to CJ Affiliate by Conversant, and its key account manager and PMI speaker, Tomas Saulsbury-Hunter.

Name:

Tomas Saulsbury-Hunter.

Job title and company:

Key account manager, CJ Affiliate by Conversant.

In one sentence, how would you describe what the company does?

We help our merchants to acquire new customers and get the best value from existing ones, and help our publishers establish fantastic partnerships – and revenue.

What are the company’s unique selling points?

Our enormous international presence and hands-on strategy and account management give market-leading service and reach – and the scope and technology we have as part of Conversant gives us an unrivalled ability to deliver true campaign personalisation.

Within the last six months/year, what stands out as the company’s major milestones?

We were acquired by Alliance Data, which was an absolutely astounding milestone in terms of recognition of the work we’ve done and value we’ve driven as a company.

CJ have led the market by releasing our Affiliate Customer Insights products, which leverages our relationship with the wider company to deliver performance data that merges customer IDs with a host of other data, allowing us to get a really granular view on the performance and value of affiliate campaigns.

We’ve also been working behind the scenes on a raft of absolutely enormous innovations which are just coming to fruition – I can’t tell you too much now, but watch this space..!

Duration in current role:

2 years.

Where are you based?

CJ’s UK office in London.

Previous performance marketing-related companies you have worked at:

I come from a background in sales and marketing in finance and law, so came to CJ from a partnerships role at a foreign exchange. It’s really satisfying to have a role which lets me draw from a varied background but apply it to very specific problems – the variety and dynamism of the role was a huge lure to me.

What are your main job responsibilities?

I look after the Argos and TUI accounts, so my day-to-day role changes depending on what we’re working on with the client – primarily I look after strategy and direction for the accounts, as well as developing new and existing partnerships.

Take us through what you get up to on a typical working Monday:

It varies wildly depending on the Monday! We generally “set up” for the week’s work; we’ll speak with relevant client teams to get an overview of the past week’s performance and any actions from that, as well as going through the projects we’re currently working on and anything we need from each other to drive them forward.

What top three websites can you be found browsing during your lunch hour?

  • AdWeek, Reddit and news sites.

  • What are your top three tips for someone looking to get their hands on a job like yours?

  • Be friendly and open to ideas, put together a CV, and speak to us – it’s absolutely great to talk to budding talent.

Career-wise, where do you see yourself in three years’ time?

In three years exactly, I’d hope I’ll be preparing for another PMI speech! The entire marketing industry is going through a digital-led renaissance at the moment, and affiliate is a model which allows for so much innovation that it’s constantly at the bleeding edge – I can’t see that I won’t be sticking around for that.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

There really isn’t a lot – I’m an open book! It’s just a matter of asking the right questions…

Tomas joins vouchercloud’s Mark Andres for the session ‘Hitting Moving Targets: Smart Geolocation and Consumer Intent’ at Performance Marketing Insights next week.

Why This Billion Dollar Fund Manager Is Betting Big on Facebook Inc

As Facebook (NASDAQ: FB  ) stock sets new all-time highs, pushing its valuation to the $250 billion milestone, it is pretty clear investors — individual and institutional alike — see a lot of good things ahead for the social media company. Even with a consensus stock price target of $96 per share, it is not hard to find investors who expect Facebook to easily surpass that price level.

This outperformance has caught the attention of Wall Street, including big hitters like Geode Capital Management. With over $200 billion in assets under management, its list of holdings runs into the hundreds, and one of the top bets is Facebook. As of this writing, Geode owns nearly $1.5 billion worth of Facebook stock, including approximately $700 million added during the first three months of 2015.

What’s not to like?
Video ads on Facebook are not entirely new: The company began testing the waters a couple of years ago, but the potential was obvious. In fact, for the lucky few that were included in the video ad testing phase, Facebook was reportedly asking for a cool $1 million a day for the privilege. Now, video spots have gone mainstream, and early indications are that video is everything Facebook, and investors, had hoped it would be.

According to one of Facebook’s primary marketing partners, the social network has taken an ever-increasing piece of its over two million advertisers’ budgets, and at least part of that trend is thanks to video spots. Video is already the fastest-growing advertising segment at the company. Considering it only unwrapped video spots across its massive 1.44 billion monthly average user (MAU) base a few months ago, that kind of early success should have digital ad king Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) (NASDAQ: GOOGL  ) on the alert.

With YouTube, Google remains the video leader, but the early success at Facebook cannot be ignored. It may actually be one reason the search leader is concentrating on better monetizing the site. News of a pending paid subscription service, the growing number of “skippable” ads, and a lot more time spent discussing YouTube on quarterly earnings calls may simply be a coincidence, or they may be signals that Google is focused on that opportunity, at least in part, due to Facebook’s success.

The next great thing(s)
Institutional investors like Geode can certainly hang their hat on video spots, growing MAUs, and strong mobile adoption. But what should really get Facebook fans excited is what lies on the horizon.

The $2 billion Facebook spent for Oculus and its Rift virtual reality (VR) headset last year was a head-scratcher for some. Hardware? What was Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg thinking? It turns out, Zuckerberg was thinking about the $3 billion market VR is expected to become in just five years, thanks to a worldwide community of 1.2 billion gamers. Facebook has plans for Oculus that go well beyond gaming, but that alone should make the industry-leading Rift well worth the price tag.

Now, toss in the recent deal with new VR pal Microsoft to sync Rift with its popular Xbox console, and Oculus really begins to look like another growth driver. Scheduled for release in early 2016, Facebook shareholders will not have to wait long to begin seeing a return on the Rift investment.

Even more exciting for Geode and other Facebook investors was the recent news that the ad testing phase at Instagram has come to an end, and it is time to start monetizing what nearly every industry pundit agrees is a potential goldmine. Naturally, revenue estimates vary, but many suggest Instagram could generate nearly $6 billion annually by 2020 with some forecasts going much higher.

It is easy to see why there are so many Instagram bulls around. Its photo-sharing foundation is a natural conduit for thoughtful, targeted ads, which Facebook does extremely well. And with video spots in full-swing, Instagram and its 300 million plus MAUs are an ideal market for Facebook’s marketing partners — the app should help rein in even more brand name advertisers, an opportunity COO Sheryl Sandberg alluded to last quarter.

And that’s not all
In April of this year, WhatsApp announced it had surpassed the 800 million MAU benchmark, inching ever closer to the magical one billion. One billion MAUs is “magical” because Zuckerberg has said Facebook will not consider monetizing the service until there are one billion users. It appears that time is close at hand, which presents another tantalizing revenue opportunity.

Not be outdone, Facebook recently announced that its as-yet-unmonetized Messenger service also has over 700 million MAUs, up from 600 million just a few months ago. It is no wonder folks like Geode are adding to their already large stakes in Facebook: as impressive as its performance has been, the company is just scratching the surface.

This $19 trillion industry could destroy the Internet

One bleeding-edge technology is about to put the World Wide Web to bed. And if you act quickly, you could be among the savvy investors who enjoy the profits from this stunning change. Experts are calling it the single largest business opportunity in the history of capitalism… The Economist is calling it “transformative”… But you’ll probably just call it “how I made my millions.” Don’t be too late to the party — click here for one stock to own when the Web goes dark.

The Mythical Affiliate Manager: Why An Agency Is A Better Fit For An Online Merchant

mythical_horse.jpg

When a brand decides it wants to properly attack its marketing, it seeks out experts to help them do so. Sure, they may have a marketing manager in-house to oversee the marketing process but when they need heavy lifting in the form of an integrated advertising strategy that plays out across multiple media in multiple markets, they turn to an advertising agency.

It’s no different when a brand decides to enter the affiliate marketing channel.
Many merchants entering the affiliate channel believe a workable solution is to delegate all affiliate marketing responsibilities to an in-house affiliate manager and/or hook up with an affiliate network’s managed services offering. But an affiliate manager is just one person and an affiliate network is just a platform, a technology provider and not a marketing expert. Much in the same way Google Search is a platform for search engine marketing and does not offer search marketing expertise.

Neither solution is the best solution for a merchant who truly wants to maximize returns through the affiliate channel. Let’s take a look at several reasons why a merchant should consider an affiliate marketing agency for its affiliate marketing program.

Turnover – An affiliate marketing agency is stable in the sense that it is a corporation that consists of many people who work as a team to accomplish effective affiliate channel management for merchants. Yes, people come and people go but the team stays in place. While a great affiliate manager aims to do the same great things as an agency, they are just one person, not a team. And when they leave, and they will, the merchant, effectively, has to go back to square one.

On average, affiliate managers — like any one in any marketing professions — last about 14 months before they move on to their next gig. And when they do, most of the processes, procedures, practices and amassed knowledge disappear with the exiting affiliate manager.

Continuity — Akin to the aforementioned turnover, continuity, as it relates to merchant revenue, can be lost. When an affiliate manager leaves a merchant, it’s a dramatic revenue disruption. Processes, procedures, practices and knowledge leave when the affiliate manager leaves and a new affiliate manager must get up to speed of be trained.
While that is happening, the merchant’s affiliate program is not running at 100% and that can lead to a disruption in revenue. Existing relationships with affiliate networks that have been built up over time with the in-house affiliate manager walk out the door along with the exiting affiliate manager and the merchant has to build those relationships all over again.

Expertise — With an affiliate manager, you get a warm body in a chair who is lucky if they can keep up with anything more than the very mechanical aspects of managing a merchant’s affiliate channel. This is not meant as a disrespectful jab, simply an observation that an affiliate manager is one person, not a team. An agency gives you a team of experts who are adept at optimizing campaigns, customizing creative, building and maintaining relationships with affiliates and networks.

Clout — If an affiliate can have a phone call with an agency and bang out a program with 200 retailers at the same time versus have a phone call with one affiliate manager at one retailer, who do you think that affiliate is most likely to answer the call from. This is a serious stumbling block with the in-house affiliate manager model.

Agencies have clout. Just like any large entity in any segment of marketing or the broader business world, they can get stuff done because they have a much bigger reach and a larger command of the affiliate channel. An in-house affiliate manager simply lacks the bandwidth to do everything necessary to run a full blown affiliate program.

Cost Effectiveness — When a merchant hires an individual affiliate manager, they are taking a risk in that they don’t always know what they are getting. When an agency is hired, it’s a simple fee. With an in-house employee, there’s benefits, vacation, sick days, bonuses, training costs and other unforeseen costs.

In addition, agencies are on 24/7. Certainly an individual affiliate manager can work their ass off but, again, they are just one person, not a team like an agency.

And then there’s cost-related risks. Is the affiliate manager exceptional? Are they just OK? Or are they terrible and will need to be replaced in 6 months? With an agency the proof is in the portfolio and tenure of clients. Sure, an agency can suck too but there are more solid metrics on which to judge that agency.

Experience — A single affiliate manager has a limited set of experience. That just comes with being a single person. An agency brings to the table a stable of experience, an overlapping army of expertise spanning many years working with many different merchants, networks and affiliates. Yes, people can come and go from an agency just like affiliate managers come and go from merchants but an agency team can retain the collective knowledge much more effectively than an individual person. With an agency, a merchant gets continuity of experience.

What about Network Managed Services? — Yes, networks can bring scale to a merchant’s affiliate program but there are limitations. Chiefly, the merchant only has access to the affiliates in its network. That’s limiting if the merchant wants to explore all options.

And then there’s the question of strategy. If a network offers strategic advice to a merchant, it’s questionable at best. Why? Because any advice that network gives is going to involve pointing the merchants money right back at the network whether or not the network’s solution is best for the merchant. The network has no motivation to seek out and discover options outside its network that might be a better strategic direction for the merchant.

As a merchant, you want the best possible return for the affiliate channel. To get the best possible return, a merchant has to be able to get an unbiased, 50,000 foot view of the affiliate channel and, in addition, reliable, consistent expertise that will never walk out the door and sap affiliate channel revenue.

Adobe Summit: Audience Manager, Primetime, Internet of Things Marketing Announced

Adobe, a Facebook Marketing Partner, announced Monday night at its Adobe Summit a flurry of new capabilities — including two new additions (Adobe Audience Manager, Adobe Primetime) to the Adobe Marketing cloud and marketing options for the Internet of Things (IoT).

Brad Rencher, senior vice president and general manager, Digital Marketing Business at Adobe, discussed the new offerings in a press release:

Marketing has been driving digital transformation at the world’s largest brands, agencies and media companies. Now, marketing is moving beyond the marketing department and transforming how enterprises organize and engage with customers across every touch point. Enabled by a richer view of the customer, digital experiences are starting to change how we shop, open hotel room doors, interact with our cars and buy soda from vending machines.

Here’s a look at the new offerings from Adobe:

Adobe Audience Manager & Adobe Primetime

In addition to Adobe Analytics, Adobe Target, Adobe Social, Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Media Optimizer and Adobe Campaign, the company announced at Adobe Summit two new programs into the Adobe Marketing Cloud toolbox: Adobe Audience Manager and Adobe Primetime.

The company explained in a press release:

Adobe Audience Manager and Adobe Primetime are now part of the Adobe Marketing Cloud. Audience Manager offers new capabilities to gain greater insight into customer journeys, including a new Audience Marketplace to buy and sell anonymous audience data, and cross-device identification that lets marketers take advantage of user authentications to target individuals in a household that share a single device.

Adobe Primetime is used by NBC Sports, Comcast, Turner Broadcasting, Time Warner Cable and others, now allows marketers and ad operations professionals to import first-, second- and third-party audience data into Audience Manager and execute ad campaigns targeting specific audience segments. With cross-device frequency capping, media companies can now deliver personalized ads across platforms, and ensure that a single user with more than one device doesn’t have to watch the same ad with more than the desired number of exposures.

Ad tech improvements

Adobe is also applying a deeper level of integration to its ad buying solution:

Programmatic ad buying continues to be a challenge for today’s advertisers, with too much focus placed on display ad bidding and multiple data vendors providing different buying methods and billing practices. Adobe today announced a solution, combining a new algorithmic engine and key advancements to Audience Core Services to unify audience targeting, buying, data and billing in one platform. The solution integrates audience and behavior data from a broad range of sources (including Web, mobile app and CRM systems), automates the execution of paid media campaigns through Adobe Media Optimizer and lets marketers use the same audience segments across earned and owned campaigns to deliver consistent experiences.

IoT - Car Dashboard

Marketing solutions for IoT

As the Internet of Things becomes more widespread, there will be a great race to market beyond laptops, cell phones and tablets, and into wearables, appliances and cars. The IoT is a major part of the Adobe Summit, and the company will showcase the newest technology. Here’s how Adobe is preparing companies to market through the IoT:

Adobe Marketing Cloud enables brands to extend the impact of marketing across more touch points including wearables and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. Adobe Experience Manager Screens and Adobe Target now bring highly personalized experiences to physical spaces like retail stores and hotel rooms and enable marketers to optimize content across any IoT device. The new IoT SDK lets brands measure and analyze consumer engagement across any of those devices, and new Intelligent Location capabilities allow companies to use GPS and iBeacon data to optimize their physical brand presence.

Adobe Summit keynote sessions can be viewed live online Tuesday, March 10, and Wednesday, March 11 from 9-11 a.m. MST.

Affiliate Manager Boot Camp: Recruiting, Educating, and Retaining Affiliates

In Affiliate Manager Boot Camp: Recruiting, Educating, and Retaining Affiliates, author Shawn Collins presents a three-step approach for affiliate managers to recruit, educate, and retain affiliates in their affiliate programs.

Drawing on his ten years of experience as an affiliate manager and his work as an affiliate marketer since 1997, Collins reveals a process for cultivating and maintaining relationships with affiliates.

The book describes a method that focuses on quality over quantity when it comes to affiliates, and it recommends working side by side with affiliates as valuable partners in a mutually beneficial affiliation.

Affiliate Manager Boot Camp: Recruiting, Educating, and Retaining Affiliates is not about the other nuts and bolts of starting and running an affiliate program.

You won’t learn about policing affiliates, setting budgets and projections, determining commission rates, etc. It’s all about recruiting, educating, and retaining affiliates for a strong affiliate program.

Collins’ first affiliate management book, Successful Affiliate Marketing for Merchants, published in 2001, was dubbed the “bible of affiliate marketing” by Revenue Magazine.

He also wrote the international best-selling Extra Money Answer in 2013, which was a step-by-step guide for creating an affiliate website.
